Reverse Archaeology: I diseredati / The Dispossessed by artist Amie Siegel
Rome, 26 October 2026 – Naples, 27 October 2026 – Turin, 31 October 2026
Following the completion of I diseredati / The Dispossessed, the new work by artist Amie Siegel, the Reverse Archaeology series of talks offers three occasions for discussion in Rome (Sapienza University of Rome, Aula Chabod – 26 October 2026, 5:00 pm), Naples (Centro Musei delle Scienze Naturali e Fisiche, University of Naples Federico II – 27 October 2026, 4:30 pm) and Turin (Museo Egizio and live streaming – 31 October 2026, 6:00 pm).
Through a presentation of the artist’s project and a preview screening of excerpts from the work, the three events will explore the research Siegel has carried out over more than two years between Pompeii and Naples, examining the relationship between archaeological materials, their contexts of origin, and the places and practices of their conservation.
I diseredati / The Dispossessed is in fact based on a radical inversion of the archaeological process: it imagines and proposes the return of objects from ancient Pompeii, now held in the storage facilities of the Park and of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, to the places where they were originally found, thereby reactivating a profound relationship between objects, architecture and memory.
The three meetings will each be an opportunity for dialogue and exchange among professionals and specialists from different fields of culture, contemporary art, archaeology and conservation, bringing together expertise, perspectives and practices at an international level. Starting from Siegel’s work, the conversation will extend to the themes of archaeology, museology, conservation and the preservation of cultural heritage, questioning the processes through which objects are discovered, studied, preserved, interpreted and returned to public knowledge and experience.
The events in Rome, Naples and Turin are made possible thanks to the collaboration of the institutions that have joined as partners in the activities promoting the project I diseredati / The Dispossessed: Sapienza University of Rome, Museo delle Civiltà, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Madre – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina, Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II, Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Museo Egizio of Turin, Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow, Princeton University, and University of Colorado Denver.
The events are organised as part of the project I diseredati / The Dispossessed, supported by PAC2025 – Piano per l’Arte Contemporanea, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
