Archaeological Matters<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the first long-term, contemporary art programme, established by the <\/span><b>Archaeological Park of Pompeii \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launches its <\/span><b>first printed publication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as a new <\/span><b>yearly programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b><i>Digital Fellowships<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inaugural participants are seven international artists, designers, thinkers, and researchers:<\/span><b> Formafantasma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Allison Katz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Miao Ying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Legacy Russell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Anri Sala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Rose Salane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Sissel Tolaas. <\/b><b><i>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was conceived in 2020 by <\/span><b>Massimo Osanna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (General Director of Italy\u2019s National Museums) and <\/span><b>Andrea Viliani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Director of the Museum of Civilizations, Rome), and since 2021 it has been overseen by <\/span><b>Gabriel Zuchtriegel (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii). <\/span><b>The programme is curated by Andrea Viliani and Stella Bottai with Caterina Avataneo. Project Management: Laura Mariano.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first two years of activities \u2013 focused on reconfiguring the archaeological site of Pompeii as a foundation for alternative forms of knowledge, forming through a multiplicity of functions, and studying and sharing the multiple cognitive potentials of Pompeii and the episteme of its \u201carchaeological matters\u201d \u2013 <\/span><b><i>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now developing a new step of its research platform launching <\/span><b><i>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters \u2013 Digital Fellowships<\/i><\/b><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a new yearly programme, facilitating <\/span><b>artistic <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>curatorial research <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within <\/span><b>Pompeii\u2019s uniquely trans-temporal, multi-species, and deeply entangled context<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The first and unique framework of this kind at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Fellowships<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promote and foster plural forms of <\/span><b>engagement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>interpretation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>accessibility to Pompeian heritage <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> its multiple histories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the<\/span><b> technological episteme of our time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as empower the transformability of matters, critically exploring what matters have become, or could become, within our digital epoch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curated by the curatorial team of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other guest curators, under the lead of <\/span><b>Stella Bottai, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and developed in <\/span><b>partnership with CURA., <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters \u2013 Digital Fellowships <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable international participants to carry out an expanded \u2013 both <\/span><b>remote<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>in situ<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><b>research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over a period of several months, focusing on Pompeii or aspects related to its symbology and meaning at large. The new<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Digital Fellowships <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledge and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nurture <\/span><b>Pompeii\u2019s global relevance as an active, contemporary research centre <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose archaeological dimension lies in the <\/span><b>present<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>future<\/b> <b>even more than the past<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the course of their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> period, participants identify and receive access to <\/span><b>archaeological resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>newly commissioned<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>archival documentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>scientific literature, and other research materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are offered the possibility to be in <\/span><b>dialogue with Pompeii\u2019s team of professionals and researchers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as archaeologists, anthropologists, archaeozoologists, archaeobotanists, geologists, chemists, architects, conservators. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Fellowships <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endorse and encourage <\/span><b>open-ended<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>experimental methodologies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, driven by <\/span><b>innovative approaches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the end of their research period, each participant shares an outcome on the <\/span><b>digital portal<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pompeiicommitment.org<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mark the culmination of their fellowship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inaugural participants in 2022-2023 are <\/span><b>Formafantasma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Allison Katz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Miao Ying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Legacy Russell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Anri Sala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Rose Salane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Sissel Tolaas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anri Sala <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the author of the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to be published in two parts on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pompeiicommitment.org<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><b><i>Side A<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><b>1 September 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b><i>Side A Too<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><b> 6 October 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Anri Sala\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is curated by<\/span><b> Marcella Beccaria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chief Curator and Curator of Collections at Castello di Rivoli Museo d\u2019Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Turin and Vice President of AMACI-Associazione dei Musei d\u2019Arte Contemporanea Italiani.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>online publication <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pompeiicommitment.org <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be <\/span><b>followed by a limited-edition vinyl release<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The works of Anri Sala are devices that instigate the \u201cpresent moment\u201d, becoming co-producers of the elusive time-space fragment that separates the before from the after and the past from the memory that tries to remember it. Sala\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> research focuses on the remains of two victims of Vesuvius\u2019 eruption, found in 2020\u00a0 during the excavations in Civita Giuliana, and connects them with the recovery of a double flute (known as<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aulos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ancient Greek, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tibia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Latin) during earlier excavations at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. Sala engages with the possibility of working on a relation between two victims and the double musical instrument by imagining a piece of music whose length corresponds to the void left by their bodies. Played by an experimental reconstruction of the ancient tibia, the <\/span><b>final aural piece, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently under production, will offer an<\/span><b> elegy to the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a site which keeps coming back from the past into the present, transmitting toward the future, making both space and time porous entities, folded in and on themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, in autumn 2022 will be released the first printed publication edited by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and published by <\/span><b>Silvana Editoriale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Conceived as both the culmination of and a further reflection upon <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pompeii Commitment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s foundational activities (December 2020\u2013June 2022) on the digital research centre <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pompeiicommitment.org<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this upcoming <\/span><b>catalogue <\/b><b><i>Pompeii Commitment.
