In<\/span> autumn 2022<\/b>,<\/span> Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters<\/i><\/b> \u2013 the first long-term, contemporary art programme, established by the <\/span>Archaeological Park of Pompeii \u2013 <\/b>launches its <\/span>first printed publication<\/b> as well as a new <\/span>yearly programme<\/b> of <\/span>Digital Fellowships<\/i><\/b>,<\/span> whose<\/span> inaugural participants are seven international artists, designers, thinkers, and researchers:<\/span> Formafantasma<\/b>,<\/span> Allison Katz<\/b>, <\/span>Miao Ying<\/b>,<\/span> Legacy Russell<\/b>,<\/span> Anri Sala<\/b>,<\/span> Rose Salane<\/b>,<\/span> and<\/span> Sissel Tolaas. <\/b>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters <\/i><\/b>was conceived in 2020 by <\/span>Massimo Osanna<\/b> (General Director of Italy\u2019s National Museums) and <\/span>Andrea Viliani<\/b> (Director of the Museum of Civilizations, Rome), and since 2021 it has been overseen by <\/span>Gabriel Zuchtriegel (<\/b>General Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii). <\/span>The programme is curated by Andrea Viliani and Stella Bottai with Caterina Avataneo. Project Management: Laura Mariano.<\/b><\/p>\n After the first two years of activities \u2013 focused on reconfiguring the archaeological site of Pompeii as a foundation for alternative forms of knowledge, forming through a multiplicity of functions, and studying and sharing the multiple cognitive potentials of Pompeii and the episteme of its \u201carchaeological matters\u201d \u2013 <\/span>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters<\/i><\/b> is now developing a new step of its research platform launching <\/span>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters \u2013 Digital Fellowships<\/i><\/b>,<\/b> a new yearly programme, facilitating <\/span>artistic <\/b>and <\/span>curatorial research <\/b>within <\/span>Pompeii\u2019s uniquely trans-temporal, multi-species, and deeply entangled context<\/b>. The first and unique framework of this kind at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the <\/span>Digital Fellowships<\/span><\/i> promote and foster plural forms of <\/span>engagement<\/b>, <\/span>interpretation<\/b> and <\/span>accessibility to Pompeian heritage <\/b>and<\/span> its multiple histories<\/b> through the<\/span> technological episteme of our time<\/b>, as well as empower the transformability of matters, critically exploring what matters have become, or could become, within our digital epoch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Curated by the curatorial team of <\/span>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters<\/span><\/i> and other guest curators, under the lead of <\/span>Stella Bottai, <\/b>and developed in <\/span>partnership with CURA., <\/b>Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters \u2013 Digital Fellowships <\/span><\/i>enable international participants to carry out an expanded \u2013 both <\/span>remote<\/b> and <\/span>in situ<\/b> \u2013 <\/span>research<\/b> over a period of several months, focusing on Pompeii or aspects related to its symbology and meaning at large. The new<\/span> Digital Fellowships <\/span><\/i>acknowledge and<\/span> nurture <\/span>Pompeii\u2019s global relevance as an active, contemporary research centre <\/b>whose archaeological dimension lies in the <\/span>present<\/b> and <\/span>future<\/b> even more than the past<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Over the course of their <\/span>Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i> period, participants identify and receive access to <\/span>archaeological resources<\/b>, <\/span>newly commissioned<\/b> and <\/span>archival documentation<\/b>, <\/span>scientific literature, and other research materials<\/b>. They are offered the possibility to be in <\/span>dialogue with Pompeii\u2019s team of professionals and researchers<\/b>, such as archaeologists, anthropologists, archaeozoologists, archaeobotanists, geologists, chemists, architects, conservators. The <\/span>Digital Fellowships <\/span><\/i>endorse and encourage <\/span>open-ended<\/b> and <\/span>experimental methodologies<\/b>, driven by <\/span>innovative approaches<\/b>. Anri Sala\u2019s <\/span>Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i> is curated by<\/span> Marcella Beccaria<\/b>, Chief Curator and Curator of Collections at Castello di Rivoli Museo d\u2019Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Turin and Vice President of AMACI-Associazione dei Musei d\u2019Arte Contemporanea Italiani.<\/span> Its <\/span>online publication <\/b>on <\/span>pompeiicommitment.org <\/span>will be <\/span>followed by a limited-edition vinyl release<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n The works of Anri Sala are devices that instigate the \u201cpresent moment\u201d, becoming co-producers of the elusive time-space fragment that separates the before from the after and the past from the memory that tries to remember it. Sala\u2019s <\/span>Digital Fellowship<\/span><\/i> research focuses on the remains of two victims of Vesuvius\u2019 eruption, found in 2020\u00a0 during the excavations in Civita Giuliana, and connects them with the recovery of a double flute (known as<\/span> aulos<\/span><\/i> in Ancient Greek, <\/span>tibia<\/span><\/i> in Latin) during earlier excavations at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. Sala engages with the possibility of working on a relation between two victims and the double musical instrument by imagining a piece of music whose length corresponds to the void left by their bodies. Played by an experimental reconstruction of the ancient tibia, the <\/span>final aural piece, <\/b>currently under production, will offer an<\/span> elegy to the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii \u2013 <\/b>a site which keeps coming back from the past into the present, transmitting toward the future, making both space and time porous entities, folded in and on themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n Again, in autumn 2022 will be released the first printed publication edited by <\/span>Pompeii Commitment. Conceived as both the culmination of and a further reflection upon <\/span>Pompeii Commitment<\/span><\/i>\u2019s foundational activities (December 2020\u2013June 2022) on the digital research centre <\/span>pompeiicommitment.org<\/span>, this upcoming <\/span>catalogue <\/b>Pompeii Commitment.
